CHALLENGE

Founded in 1948, The Pew Charitable Trusts is a nonpartisan, evidence-based organization that uses data to illuminate issues, create common ground, and advance ambitious strategies. The organization’s website, pewtrusts.org, is home to thousands of pages of research and findings, making it a critical resource to the organization, its stakeholders, and the communities impacted by its work. But as the speed and volume of online communication increases, they needed a digital ecosystem grounded by a centerpiece platform that could help them stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape.

IMPACT

Our work began with a thorough discovery process that included a landscape and gap analysis, stakeholder interviews, and material review, allowing us to develop a thorough and tactical understanding of Pew’s digital ecosystem goals, needs, and pain points. As both a singular source for reliable information and a driver of progress, it was essential that the organization’s ecosystem evolve beyond a mere digital catalog of its work and into a gateway through which credibility is established, trust is cultivated, and impact is magnified. We used this point of view to create a new direction for the site rooted in bold, yet judicious imagery and clean, confident type — elements that came together to bring a sense of trust, order, and legibility to a colossal network of webpages, and define how the brand came to life digitally in 2024 and beyond. Pew needed a visual system that conveyed authority, directness, and authenticity in a sea of misinformation – and we provided just that.

To guide future digital production, we created a comprehensive content playbook for the organization. While centered on ensuring that future content for the website is strategically informed and impactful, this multi-channel narrative and strategic approach provides clear guidelines for content development teams across Pew — aligning everyone responsible for Pew’s website content around the same strategic north star.

As we prepare to launch the updated website in spring 2025, we’re seeing the impact of our partnership manifest itself in a number of ways. Pew now has a defined visual system and a cohesive story to tell about the impact of their work across 40+ areas of diverse expertise — from cultural grants to land conservation — and their digital communications are being built to ground users in that story, no matter the entry point.
